Obuse Town is a picturesque and interesting town known for its rich history of art and premium chestnuts and other farm produce. The town proudly houses a number of interesting museums and galleries, the most notable that of the famous wood block artist Katsushika Hokusai, aptly named Hokusai Museum.

The town is the largest domestic producer of chestnuts, shimeji mushrooms and round maru-nasu eggplants. You’ll find a wonder of chestnut treats – ice creams, cakes, cookies and an array of traditional Japanese sweets. If chestnuts are not your thing, there are plenty of other choices to appease your taste buds – apple turnovers, soft serve ice cream, crepes and more.

Obuse has a number of great souvenirs to browse, many gourmet wonders made from the fresh produce of the surrounding farmland, as well as Japanese paper crafts, and rice wine produced by the 250-year-old Masuichi Sake Brewery.

Obuse is also quite well known for its big collection of Japan’s most famous artist, Hokusai Katsushika’s artwork. Hokusai’s signature “great wave” wood-block prints can be seen at Hokusai Museum in Obuse.
